What to do when you’re in Sydney – 5 absolute must-do’s

What to do in Sydney

If you’re wondering what to do when you’re in Sydney, whether it is just for a couple of days or for a few weeks, there are a number of absolute must-do’s. I always joke around and say that you haven’t really been to Sydney if you haven’t done these things or visited these places. So here we go!

1. The Sydney Harbour

This might be a very obvious one but it’s definitely the number one thing you cannot miss when you’re in Sydney: the Sydney Harbour.

The iconic Opera House and Harbour Bridge

In the Sydney Harbour you’ll find the world famous Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. You can simply wander around the harbour to take in the gorgeous views from different angles, but if you’re up for a little walk and have a bit of time, I’d recommend doing The Sydney Icon Walk.

2. Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk

My favorite of favorites in Sydney: the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk. If you really don’t have a lot of time, I’m even tempted to tell you to skip the Opera House and do the Bondi to Coogee walk instead.

This coastal walk takes you past the most beautiful beaches of the Eastern Suburbs. Not only will you be blown away by the insanely stunning views along the way, you’ll also come across a very beautiful graveyard and a few of Sydney’s most iconic ocean pools. Which brings me to my next point…

3. Swim at one of the iconic ocean pools

Sydney is home to many beautiful ocean pools where you take a refreshing dip to cool down from the Australian heat. You’ll find a few of these iconic ocean pools on the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk. 4. Visit Manly

Whenever I’m on the ferry to Manly I feel like I’m going on holiday. Manly is a lovely suburb in Sydney’s Northern Beaches, and a great place to go for a day trip. Walk to the gorgeous shelly beach or have a coffee/beer in one of Manly’s many cafes.

Manly is also a very popular spot for water sports. Rent a kayak or a SUP board and sail away!

5. Go whale watching (seasonal)

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw a whale for the first time. These creatures are so majestic and to witness them with your own eyes is very special.

From April to November tens of thousands whales migrate along Australia’s East Coast. You can either go on a day trip “with guaranteed whale spotting” or you can try to spot these magical creatures yourself all over Sydney. A very popular spot for whale watching is Hornby Lighthouse in Watsons Bay. Read more about Watsons Bay here.

If you have more time….

If you have plenty of time and already did all of the exciting things I mentioned above, then the following activities might be fun for you as well:

  • Souvenir shopping in China Town
Every big city has its own China Town, and so does Sydney. Go to Paddy’s Market to shop some souvenirs for 1/4 the price regular souvenir shops ask.
  • Coffee at The Grounds of Alexandria
The Grounds of Alexandria is a stunning place to grab coffee, have lunch or even shop for flowers. There’s always a certain style theme going on – Instagrammable pictures guaranteed.
  • Go to the Blue Mountains
About three hours by train from Sydney you’ll find the stunning Blue Mountains. If you love nature and hiking then this is a place you don’t want to miss.
  • Feel like a kid again at Luna Park Sydney
If you’re looking for some fun and laughing-until-it-hurts you have to visit Luna Park Sydney. I had sooo much fun going down the slides and watching my friends fall of the joy wheel.
