Where to see wild Kangaroos in Melbourne – Westerfolds Park

lots of kangaroos

Who ever thought you can see wild kangaroos in Melbourne? Not me! But like many other Australia-bound travelers, seeing wild Kangaroos is the ultimate Australia travel goal.

I had a friend from overseas visiting and as she would only visit Sydney and visit Melbourne, the chances of her seeing wild kangaroos were very small. That is, until I heard you can actually spot wild kangaroos in Melbourne! Let’s see if the rumors are true…

Hop on the bus

Wild kangaroos can be spotted in Westerfolds park, in Melbourne’s north-eastern suburb Templestowe. Getting there is super easy. There are several points in the CBD where you can hop on the bus towards Westerfolds Park. We took the bus from Southern Cross Station and within 40-50 minutes we arrived at our destination.

When go?

The best time to spot kangaroos is usually (early) in the morning or at the end of the day. We chose to go to Westerfolds Park around 4pm.

Roos, where art thou?

As soon as we walked into the park I spotted some kangaroo poo. Yes! We were on at the right track!

It took about 30 minutes of strolling around the park before I saw the first kangaroo in the far distance. My friend was over the moon: her first wild kangaroo, whoohoo!

See that roo, far in the distance?

So. Many. Kangaroos!

It didn’t take long before we saw another kangaroo. And another one. Soon there were entire mobs of kangaroos running around, and we even saw a mum and her little joey 🙂

Aren’t they adorable?

But wait… there’s more!

Kangaroos aren’t the only wild Aussie creatures that can be spotted in Westerfolds Park. 30 minutes before or after sunset you might also be able to spot some wombats, my favorite Aussie animal 🙂

A friendly local also told us there are heaps of echidna’s in Westerfold park, and that many, many years ago she also saw a koala here.

If you’re looking for more places around Melbourne to find wild kangaroos, then I can highly recommend the article “where to see wild kangaroos near Melbourne” by Walk My World. It is thanks to their wonderful article that we’ve been able to spot these Aussie icons in Westerfolds Park 🙂
