Selamat datang to Canggu’s oldest hotel: Tugu

Beautiful Balinese art. Wonderful spacious rooms. Centrally located but yet so quiet and peaceful. That’s Hotel Tugu in Canggu.

A warm welcome
As soon as we arrived at Hotel Tugu I could tell this wasn’t your average hotel. Leading up to the hotel’s entrance was a big wooden runway with beautiful Balinese statues on each side. On the right side was a small museum which we would get to visit the day after, and as soon as we arrived inside of the hotel we were standing in a majestic hall with Balinese beauty surrounding us everywhere. We got to meet the hotels lovely PR manager Annisa and were welcomed with a delicious drink.

The biggest bed EVER
We were then accompanied to our room, the Dedari Suite, which was literally a dream. I remember when I just started out travel blogging I’d dream of staying in places like these, and when I entered this room I had to pinch myself three times to realize that this was really happening. The room was decorated in warm colors, had plenty of places to sit down and relax and we even had our own plunge pool with swinging chair. The bathroom was not only very pretty, but probably one of the most authentic bathrooms I’ve ever seen. And I wouldn’t be an Instagrammer if I didn’t take full advantage of this stunning bathroom by taking a lovely flower bath. It looks beautiful, it feels nice, and afterwards you’ve got flower beads in places you’d never had them before 😉

But my favorite part of the room was the bed. My cousin and I could both lie down as a starfish and still not touch each other. It was HUGE! And soft! And before we went to bed, the staff left a beautiful good night wish on the bed, which was a quote by Eleanor Roosevelt: “The future belongs to those who believe in the power of their dreams”.

Not just a hotel
Tugu Hotel is designed to bring back to life the romantic, forgotten tales of Java and Bali. The hotel is owned by an Indonesian who has been collecting antiques since the early 1960s. The art collection in the hotel is one of the largest original art collections in Southeast Asia. On our second day in the hotel, Annisa showed us around. She showed us the museum, the art collection, but also the more exclusive suites, like the honeymoon suite. The suites at Tugu Hotel are situated around a big, beautiful pond with Lotus flowers and beautiful greenery.

What would you like for breakfast?
We were welcome to have our breakfast anywhere: in the restaurant, on the rooftop or just in the coziness of our own room. When I went out to order breakfast the super friendly staff told me we could order anything from the menu. Anything?! I felt like a kid in a candy story. Okay! I’ll have the fresh banana shake please. And the acai bowl. Oh and the pancakes. Ahhh and maybe also a fruit platter! Trust me – it tasted as good as it sounds and I ate it all.

If you’re planning to visit Bali and you’d like to stay in a authentic Balinese/Indonesian hotel then I would very much recommend booking a few nights at Hotel Tugu. It is super centrally located in the bustling Canggu, extremely close to the beach and staying there is an experience in itself. I hope to visit Lombok later this year, and I’m already looking forward to staying at Tugu Lombok 🙂
