5 fun things to do in Rhodes, Greece

There are many fun things to do on the Greek island Rhodes, one of Greece’s 6000 islands.

You’ll fly to Rhodes from Amsterdam in about four hours. Flight fares will vary between 100-200 Euro. Rhodes is located in the southern part of Greece, only 18 kilometers from Turkey. And to be very honest with you: I didn’t expect much of Rhodes. But oh, how I was wrong! Rhodes surprised me in so many ways, and in this blog I’ll give you the top 5 things to do on this ancient Greek island.

1. Rhodes Old Town

To me this was the biggest surprise of them all: Rhodes Old Town! Narrow alleyways, small cobblestone streets and lots and lots of history – that’s Rhodes Old Town. The medieval old town is surrounded by a city wall with seven entrances – one even more beautiful than the other. I couldn’t help but wander around and imagine what life must’ve been like back then.

Don’t be scared away by the crowded center of Rhodes Old town. You’ll find many touristic shops and restaurants, one even more expensive than the other (we paid 6 euros each for a bad cup of coffee and a small bottle of water). If you’re done with the crowds, simply lose yourself in one of the small alleyways and wander off. You’ll soon find yourself back in the medieval age without being run over by tourists.

2. Dinner at Rattan

Believe me, I could eat tzatziki all day, everyday. But sometimes a change is a nice as well! At night we drove to Faliraki to have dinner at Rattan Cuizine and Cocktail. Not only was the staff very welcoming and friendly, the food was amazing as well. In fact, this was the best food I had during our stay in Rhodes. Tip: if you’re vegetarian then try their truffle tagliatelle. It’s an oral explosion! For more information, visit rattancuizinecocktail.com

3. A trip to Lindos

Halfway during your Rhodes holiday you might start to wonder when you’re finally going to see some cute streets with white houses like you’ve always seen in the pictures. That’s when you go to Lindos! Lindos is located on the eastern part of the island, and doesn’t only have beautiful views but also many cute white houses with beautiful flowers. But, be warned again: this place is also taken over by tourism, and many cute white streets are covered in fake designer bags and souvenirs. Also, please don’t ride the donkeys are they are not being treated very well 🙁

4. Get on a boat!

One of the best ways to explore all the good Greece has to over is by boat! We booked a boat trip with three snorkel/swim stops with Romantika Cruises and had a blast! Not only did the very attentive staff of Romantika make sure our glasses were never empty, they prepared the most delicious lunch with the best tzatziki I ever tasted. What also pleasantly surprised me was that a huge part of their lunch was vegetarian and/or vegan friendly. Greece is not necessarily the best country to visit if you’re vegetarian (let alone vegan) but Romantika really catered to everyone’s needs. Amazing!

5. Go south – Prasonisi it is!

If you’re up for another day trip, rent a car and drive all the way south to Prasonisi. About 15 minutes before arriving there we weren’t actually sure if we were heading to the right place as we were literally driving in the middle of nowhere, but then out of the blue Prasinosi makes its appearance. Prasinosi is a peninsula that is connected to Rhodes through a small strip of sand. You can swim on both sides, making this a very popular beach destination. You’ll also find a few bars and restaurants here to have your daily dose of tzatziki or a drink.
