Last week my mom and I boarded the plane to Budapest. It takes under 2 hours to fly from Amsterdam to the Hungarian capital. Are you planning a trip to Budapest or looking for an exciting city trip in Europe? Here is some helpful info that’ll get you well on your way in Budapest.
Language and currency
In Hungary they speak Hungarian (surprise!) which is considered to be one of the most difficult languages to learn. But fear not: most Hungarians in Budapest, especially in the more touristic areas, speak English quite well.
Though Hungary is part of the European Union, they don’t have the Euro as their currency. In some touristic places you are able to pay in Euro’s, but most of the times you pay by Hungarian Forint. 1 Euro = 309 Hungarian Forint. Budapest is a relatively cheap destination compared to other (west) European countries where you can easily find a cup of coffee for one or two Euro’s.
Getting to the city
When you arrive at the airport you can take a tram, taxi or metro to the city center, but we opted for a minivan which takes you to your destination for about 8 Euro one way. Tickets can be bought at the service desk in the arrivals hall at the airport and the minivan will drop you off right in front of your hotel. Getting around
Public Transport in Budapest is great! There are heaps of buses, trams and metro’s going back and forth all day every day. We opted for a metro card as it brings you to all the touristic hotspots within no time. A ’72-hour Budapest metro travel card’ costs you Ft 4150 which is about 13,50 Euro. Perfect for traveling on a budget 🙂
Many touristic highlights are located fairly close to each other. You can easily walk from the Fisherman’s Bastion to the Grand Palace, then make your way over to the Chain Bridge and go left to visit the Parliament, so make sure you bring good walking shoes 😉 For a more detailed description on what to do and where to go in Budapest check back soon.
