5 reasons why I can’t wait to go back to Australia

I’ve been home in Amsterdam for almost four weeks now. I was so happy when I could finally hug my parents again, meet all the babies that have been born while I was gone and to catch up with friends. But I am already so excited to go back to Australia! Here are 5 reasons why.

1. The coffee!
Before I went Down Under I only drank coffee on the weekends – just so that I wouldn’t become one of those cafeine-craving-addicts who can’t start their day without a cup of coffee (no offense, of course ;)). But when I had my first sip of coffee in Melbourne I was hooked: MAN those Ozzies sure know how to brew a good coffee! Ever since I couldn’t resist drinking one Large Latte a day.

2. The people
Aussies are so nice. They will always ask you “how ya going” and will always make time for a little chat. When I was traveling in Vietnam I met an Aussie couple who I started chatting to over breakfast, for an hour or so. We stayed in touch via Facebook and when I was in Brisbane last year they invited me to stay with them. I ended up staying for a month! Correct me if I’m wrong but the average Dutchie would never invite a ‘stranger’ into their home and let them stay there for such a long time. We can learn something from their hospitality 🙂

3. The endless and countless beaches
Beaches. Beaches everywhere! Did you know Australia has over 10.000 beaches? Of course we all know famous beaches like Bondi, Coogee and even St Kilda, but even just a short ride away from the crowds you’ll stumble upon pretty, quiet and secluded beaches. I remember when I drove from Bundaberg to Agnes Water there were so many empty beaches along the way where you’ll never come across another living soul (except for a few birdies hehe). I love it!

4. The weather
Sun. I love the sun. And even though winters in Australia can be quite cold and rainy when you’re in Sydney or Melbourne, you’ll often still see the sun shine during winter in Brisbane and further up north. During summer there are plenty of hot, beautiful days where everyone just spends most of their spare time outside.

5. The funny slang
Aussie slang always cracks me up. When I first arrived in Oz I kinda struggled cause I literally didn’t understand what the locals were saying. “Let’s have a cuppa during smoko or perhaps later in the arvo“… Say what? A cuppa = a cup of tea, smoko = smoking break or just a short break and ‘arvo’ is afternoon. Aussies just LOVE to abbreviate. And did you know that The Ozzies invented the word ‘selfie’? If you’d like to hear more typical Ozzie words or sayings then watch this funny clip on YouTube.

Other reasons I can’t wait to go back Down Under are their amazing sunrises and sunsets, the fact that there are public toilets everywhere (what? I just drink a lot of water…), you can celebrate Christmas in your bikini and their money is waterproof (how convenient!). But before I go back to Oz I have a city trip to Budapest coming up, so stay tuned… 🙂

Hi Eef! I am so glad I stumbled across your blog, I love your posts about my backyard here in Australia 😀 especially your 11 Aussie sayings haha! Are you back in Amsterdam now for a while? I am heading over to Europe on a one way ticket. If you have any great recommendations for your favourite places I would love to know 🙂

      Hi Emily,
Thank you for your sweet comment! I’m happy you appreciate my 11 Aussie sayings blog – haha! Do you actually use some of them? 🙂

I’m currently in Amsterdam for a a while due to medical reasons (see my blog ‘How Koh Rong gave me reactive arthritis).

How SUPER EXCITING that you’re going to Europe on a one way ticket, aaaahhhh!! My favorite place is, of course, Amsterdam. Especially in summer the city is so alive and more charming than ever. I’m also a big fan of Barcelona and recently Budapest has also stolen my heart. The Greek Islands are like paradise (and some of them are relatively cheap!) and also Italy is sooo nice with it’s delicious coffees and pizzas. You’re gonna have the best time here!

If I’m still in Amsterdam by the time you get here then let me. know so we can grab a cup of coffee! 🙂

  • The beautiful Belgian city of Antwerp is conveniently located 2 hours south of Amsterdam and 3.5 hours north of Paris. A visit to this historically rich city is therefore an absolute must if you're on a Europe city trip 🇪🇺🇧🇪 ∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘
I was staying at @hotelmateloteantwerp, a gorgeous boutique hotel located 200m from the Grote Markt (picture). It therefore is the perfect place to stay whilst wandering the streets of Antwerp, tasting delicious Belgian beers and trying out some Belgian waffles and chocolate.
I absolutely ♥ Antwerp! Have you been? ∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘

Also cheers to being reunited with my friends @travel.with.j and @katvangeleyn_ who is taking this picture 😁 Jan, Katrien and I met in Australia and lived together for a couple of months in Bondi Beach. We became close friends and I couldn't be happier to finally see them again! 💕

Have a great weekend everyone! 👯

Quitting my 9 to 5 as an email marketer to jump on a plane to explore the other side of the world has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. What's the boldest decision you ever made? ∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘∘
  • Meanwhile in Amsterdam... ☼❁
Fun fact about this dress: it is actually a maternity dress🤰🏼🙈 When I came across it online at @boohoo I instantly fell in love with it and just ordered it anyway. Turns out it fits perfectly! 💕

I have this thing with swings. It's not exactly the same as a swing hanging from a palm tree on some tropical island, but this one will do just fine for now ☺️ Hope everyone is having a great weekend! 💕

The beaches in Zeeland are clearly distinguishable from other (Dutch) beaches because they have these wooden poles on the beach. The function of these poles is to avoid the current from becoming too strong, otherwise the beach would slowly disappear and eventually the dunes would be eaten up by the ocean as well. Bet you didn't know that, did you? 😁😆
